Why are we so obsessed with knowing when Christ will return?
OK, you are probably thinking that I am another individual who has written another piece on predicting or interpreting End Time events, however this is far from being that. I decided to write this piece just to look at some of the obsession we have trying to predict the Second Coming of Christ or Biblical End Times. Are we really supposed to know? Why are we so obsessed with knowing when Christ will return?
(“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.” Matthew 24:36)
It appears many would like to predict the time of the Second Coming of Christ, and yes, there are many signs and wonders, yet those predictions could still be off centuries, are we willing to accept that? One big question that I have is, should it really matter to us? God tells us not to be anxious, should this be any different, and what would we gain if we did know the exact moment? My relationship with Christ is not predicated on when He will come again, so having a date or time does not matter. My faith tells me He will at some time, and that is all that matters.
There are those who believe we must do certain things to set it all in motion, but last I heard, God Needs No Help! The events that will bring about our end times will occur because of God’s Will; our will has nothing to do with it. Pray, study scripture, and seek guidance each day. God is always in control and it does not matter how many times we post that same phrase on social media, until we believe it in our hearts we may still be under the assumption that we have to do certain things or the Second Coming will be affected.
Throughout history many have predicted the return of Christ, Hippolytus of Rome, Sextus Julius Africanus, and Irenaeus in the year 500, Beatus of Liébana on 6 April 793, Pope Sylvester II on 1 January 1000, Johannes Stöffler on 20 February 1524, John Wesley in 1836, William Miller, Millerites on 22 October 1844, Jerry Falwell between 1999–2009, Jack Van Impe in 2012, just to name a few, and there are many in between. With what we have today in mass media it seems as though someone new is coming out with a new prediction every day, and they are sure that they are correct. If Jesus said only the Father knows, why are we even trying to predict? Do we feel that will gain us a better seat in Heaven? I am still trying to understand the obsession.
(“And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” Galatians 4:6 )
I once had a pastor say often “GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND” and it always struck me as, what am I supposed to do different? If I understand correctly being a child of God, accepting Christ as our Savior should not change based on whether He returns today, tomorrow, or long after we cease to walk this earth. Our faith should not waver based on predictions from man when we already have the fact from God. It will happen and that is all we really need to know. When we put our faith in Christ and know He guides our path, knowing when He will return does not matter, because God is always in control.
Let us stop obsessing over events that we cannot control and get our hearts right with Jesus. The more we have Unity In Christ we will understand that dates do not really matter. We are in our eternity every single moment, that is what matters. Do we have the Grace of God to spend it with Him, or separated from God with no grace?
(Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect. Matthew 24:44)
